Big Pharma - The Perfect
Strorm Is Forming?
This week dealt a stunning blow to the already beleaguered
pharmaceutical industry: bisphosphonates have now been linked to both
cancer and fractures. This development is almost unimaginable as bisphosphonates, such
as Fosamax, are prescribed as osteoporosis drugs. Imagine the suprise of
the medical community to find that the drugs that they have been
prescribing to help female bone health for almost ten years now have likely increased the risk of
fractures and caused esophageal cancer as well.
Although many in the natural health community want to believe in some vast
conspiracy theory, the truth is that the great majortity of doctors genuinely want to help their patients and the
idea that their protocols have likely killed and injured so many is creating a
storm of controversy. One disaster after another has assaulted the
conscience of the entire medical infrastructure. For example, it was just
a few months that it was discovered that angiotensins, a class of drug
prescribed for heart disease, likely causes and accelerates cancers
of the prostate, lung and breast. These are the biggest, baddest cancers
on the planet and doctors - for lack of a better way to put it - feel that they
have been once again handed a "flaming turd" from the FDA and pharmaceutical
companies.

And let's face it: doctors have a lot to lose as the public is losing
confidence rapidly and turning ever increasingly to holistic, integrative and
alternative medical therapies. And why wouldn't they? One major class
after another has been found to cause major issues. Yet another example
are the statins. For almost a decade, doctors have had a love affair with
these cholesterol-lowering drugs until they realized the major muscle tissue
damage that they were promoting in a significant percentage of patients.
Again, both patients and doctors cannot help but ask, "Is the cure worse than
the disease?"
This year, 2010, is also the year that drug manufacturers pulled the weight loss
drug Meridia off the market after it was realized that it caused both heart
disease and stroke. This is yet another irony as the primary objective for
most doctors in helping a patient lose weight is to lower his or her risk for
such killer diseases. Once again, doctors found themselves hurting instead
of healing.
Avandia is yet another example: the blockbuster diabetes drug is under
review by the FDA because it appears to cause additonal heart attack risks.
This list could go on and on, but the bottom line is that almost all the drugs
that come to market are very poorly tested for safety. The pharmaceutical
companies spend tens of millions on the typical drug trial, but problems abound:
1) issues known by clincians are sometimes hidden or ignored and 2) the
complexities of the human body are poorly understood and ugly side effects
bubble to the surface as the first wave of patients become human guinea pigs.
Drugs for women are even more of a disaster. As we have explained in other
links, the fake, steroid like constraceptive estrogens prescribed for women in
this country are rife with side effects including lowered libido and sexual
dysfunction! Some of the newer drugs, such as Yaz, have a particularly
nasty side effect profile including fairly common reports ofweight gain and
blood clots for starters! This means that it is very likely doctors who
prescribe Yaz are killing or injuring a percentage of their patients just for
the sake of eliminating or blunting their period!
Doctors are starting to realize that they need to do something: patients
are becoming scared to visit and who can blame them? This is sad indeed as
Western medicine, which once eliminated such blights as polio and smallpox, is
now arguably doing as much harm as good.
From our standpoint, we can only urge all of you to keep yourself as health as
possible through following the simple principles on this web site: a Low
Fat (Ornish) Diet, Exercise and Sleep will keep you out of the doctor's office
nine times out of ten and improve your quality of life while it is at it.
The bottom line is this: you don't have to worry about the toxic, nasty
side effects of drugs if you never need to take one of them, eh?
