Dang Dengue!
Another tropical disease brought to your door step: Dengue Fever. I
like to joke around when I write, but there is nothing funny about this bad boy.
Dengue is a nasty disease with two forms. The first variant class is bad
enough including VERY high fever and excruciating head and joint pain. And the
second variant, which occurs in about 18% of cases [4], is much worse - it isn't called Dengue Hermorragic Fever
for nothing - and often results in bleeding from the nose and mouth and
extensive tissue damage. The loss of blood and general damage can be so
great that the person goes into shock as well.
I have known a number of people who have had dengue fever (type I) this year.
I believe all were hospitalized and came through it just fine. Dengue has
been growing in Mexico of late, especially the hemorragic kind. [1] Dengue comes
from mosquitos and mosquitos have been found at higher and higher levels in
Mexico - up to 6,105 feet in some case - and this has everyone concerned. [1]
Dengue has made its way into the U.S with a 2009/2010 outbreak in Florida [3] and
an overall reported rate of about 200 cases per year. [4]

Discover recently covered that Dengue is just the beginning of many diseases that
seem to be spreading due to climate change and fueled by global travel. [2] The
rapid spread of tick-borne Lyme disease and the growth of Kungunya fever, HGA
are other great examples.
The only good thing that you can say about DDT is that it likely helped fend off
the initial onslaught in past decades. But now that it is banned almost
everywhere - and it is nasty stuff! - we are also increasingly vulnerable as
well.
Unfortunatly, I see very few natural ways to defeat these new tropical diseases:
they are kings in their corner of the universe and seem to have no natural
enemies. About the best you can do is Keep Up Your Immunity and say your
prayers at night...
