Fat Chance

On this site, you will generally find that I teach an avoidance of saturated fat. I do that because several key studies have shown that saturated fat decreases endothelial function and increase inflammation and arteriosclerosis, i.e. good and bad erections. See my link on Saturated Fat for the details. In fact, I show you in the Erection Repair Guide and the Erection Supplementation Guide how to maximize your erectile function AND avoid heart disease (and cancer in some cases as well).

But I have to be honest and give full disclosure. There is another side of the argument: there are some cultures that eat saturated fat by the buckets and have virtually no heart disease. If you look at heart disease only, these cultures do extremely well even though they consume a LOT of saturated fat.

Here are just a few examples:

Do you know the foods and drinks that increase erection-boosting Nitric Oxide? Check out the Peak Erectile Strength Diet where I show you how to dramatically and naturally improve your erectile strength.

  • Americans near the turn-of-the-century had a very low rate of cardiovascular disease and yet consumed large quantities of animal fat.
  • Some African tribes, such as the Masai, consume large quantities of saturated fat. One tribe called the Sumburus consume 400 g of animal fat daily and yet are slender and have very little heart disease.
  • Two Pacific Island communities, the Pukapuka and Tokeluau, eat high quantities of coconut oil (which is loaded with saturated fat) and have virtually no cardiovascular disease.
  • The Eskimos eat large quantities of fish yet have a low rate of heart disease.

There are other examples, but you get the idea: some of the most healthy diets on planet earth include an abundance of saturated fat and/or cholesterol. And lest you think that these cultures are genetically gifted, consider this: studies showed both the Masai and the Tokeluau began developing increased heart disease and hypertension once they moved to urban areas and began ingesting a more western diet and lifestyle. That's right - "Supersize It" doesn't work for them either!

Now some very reasonable questions you are probably asking at this point are: “Many Americans eat a lot of saturated fat and cholesterol and a lot of them blow out their arteries. What are they doing wrong?" and "What is the difference between the diet of the Masai/Tokeluau/Pukapuka and wealthy western cultures?”

I’m glad you asked. All of these cultures have several things in common:

    • They avoid almost all processed carbs.
    • They eat fish (except the Masai)
    • They eat almost no sucrose, i.e. table sugar or corn syrup.
    • They maintain total daily carbohydrates in the medium low range (120-250 g).
    • Exercise and walking is a huge part of their daily lifestyle.
    • They keep body weight, i.e. Body Mass Index, in the healthy range with an abundance of exercise and a reasonable caloric intake.
    • In the case of the Masai, their cattle is range-fed and thus has a balanced omega-3/omega-6 ratio.  (See my Beef and Eggs link to the right for more details on the problems with modern sedentary, grain fed beef.)

So should you adopt their lifestyle and diet? Actually, it is doubtful you could. First of all, you probably can't or won't exercise throughout your day. Furthermore, you probably would have great difficulty getting rid of all refined sugars and grains. And, lastly, it would be difficult to eat the meat they do in its pristine state. The Masai, for example, take their cattle with them, so they are range fed with ample omega 3's. And virtually all fish sold in Western societies is plagued by high mercury, heavy metal and PCB content. And, again, how are you going to walk ten miles a day?

I cover this in much greater detail in my Great Diet Smackdown link. Let's just say that it is very difficult for modern man to be a good paleolith!  (Please read these links on The Many Dangers of Saturated Fat  and The Many Dangers of the Atkins/Paleolithic/Low Carb Diet when you get a chance.)  For example, a wild pig has 1-3% fat, but a domestic pig 36-46%.  A buffalo likewise has about 3% fat, but a modern domesticated cow 25-35%. [1]  Furthermore, modern domesticated livestock is generally fed a diet high in omega-6 fats from corn and other similar feeds, which leads to increased Inflammation.

And remember the reason that I push the Mediterranean Diet over a Low Carb/Paleolithic Diet:  your penis.  Saturated Fat has been associated with decreased endolthelial function in several studies. In contrast, the Mediterranean Diet has been shown to protect and strengthen endothelial function and improve erectile dysfunction. See this link for more details and more references.
