Weston Price Diet
I recently had a reader in his 30's write in - very cordially and politely I
might add - and express concern about my position on fat in the diet. He
then went on to comment:
"You might want to refine your position on fats and animal protein after reading the
Weston Price perspective, but I suspect you are really on the same page."
Of course, I don't begrudge him his opinion and I admit the research is
quite involved. However, I am definitely not on the same page and below I
will explain why. I'll start by noting, though, that I get this types of comments quite often and it's
almost always from men under 40. In this case it was a Weston A. Price Diet, but
in other cases the person is a fan of a Paleo Diet or Low Carb Diet.
Regardless of the label, these diets all share certain common elements:
high total fat, medium to high saturated fat and low to low medium
carbohydrates. The bottom line is that this way of eating, in this the Weston A Price
Diet, is simply impractical and downright dangerous
for the typical guy that arrives at my site. The young gentleman that wrote in, if he really takes
charge of his health and fitness, may be able to get away with a Weston A Price lifestyle.

However, that's not the picture with most men that arrive at my site with erectile
difficulties. They're generally in their 40's, 50's and 60's
and have higher blood pressure, higher arterial plaque, stiff arteries and on and on. I just
can't in good conscience tell someone like this that they can eat saturated fat and be okay and
I think Weston Price and other similar organizations are making a big mistake by giving this advice
without caveats.
These men need to clean out their arteries and the only way we
know how to do that right now is through an Ornish/Low Fat Diet. When you're young,
it is really hard to imagine that something as "drastic" as an Ornish or Low Fat
Diet being helpful,
but the research and practical experience clearly shows the results on middle-aged and senior men
with cardiovascular problems.
I also know that fat in the diet is very controversial. In fact, the way we eat is downright
religious for most of us. I could sell a lot more books if I told these men that they could
somehow eat a lot of saturated fat and total fat and recover from their heart disease and
erectile dysfunction. But I would not be able to sleep at night knowing that I'd sent a
lot of them to an early grave.
Erectile dysfunction is a very serious condition. As I point out elsewhere on my site,
men with E.D. can expect some kind of heart-related event about five years in the future if they
do not take control of their arterial health.
Most of these men can feel the decline. And what hope do they
have? Statins have many side effects and meager results.
Furthermore, almost all popular diets tell them that they can
keep eating lots of fat and their cardiovascular health will
improve in spite of an abundance of research to the contrary.
This dooms them to steadily declining health:

There is a reason, in my opinion, that it's always the younger guys that write in
advocating these type of diets. Their arteries are still relatively
undamaged and unhardened from arterial plaque. They still have some "buffer"
built into their systems to overcome the decreased blood flow and additional
arteriosclerosis that will come from a higher saturated fat diet.
So, yes, if you start young, exercise heavily and limit your glycemic
load, you can probably get away with a Weston Price Diet. But who does all of that? Most of us
have to sit for hours and hours each day at our jobs. Most of us do want carbs.
Most of us already have a hammered endothelium.
And that is why Weston Price, God bless his soul, just isn't going to help most of us...
