Title: Glycophosphates (Round Up) Dangers
Post by: PeakT on May 19, 2013, 03:32:52 pm
How many of you, like me, have sprayed Round Up with passion and abandon in your yards?  It has to be safe, right?

Well, read the link below, which is very well-written scientific paper and you'll have your doubts!

Turns out RoundUp and related herbicides are a huge worldwide industry and widely used in commerical farming on wheat, corn, sugar, etc. crops.

"So what?", you ask.  Well, it turns out that RoundUp hammers P450 cytochrome activity and also gut flora.  Good Peak Testosterone and health media readers know that this is a VERY bad idea.

Anyway, I highly recommend reading through this - it's not light reading however - to get the gyst of what this author is saying.  I'm confident you'll be buying a lot more organic products after that!

So you guys don't have to check wikipedia like I just did:

Quote
The cytochrome P450 superfamily (officially abbreviated as CYP) is a large and diverse group of enzymes that catalyze the oxidation of organic substances. The substrates of CYP enzymes include metabolic intermediates such as lipids and steroidal hormones, as well as xenobiotic substances such as drugs and other toxic chemicals. CYPs are the major enzymes involved in drug metabolism and bioactivation, accounting for about 75% of the total number of different metabolic reactions.[1]

Important note, that in your liver you have a total p450 number, which is the combine enzyme count of all differnt types of p450,s.   different enzymes are designated by different letters, i.e p450j is responsible for alcohol metabolism, so if you drink alot p450j will be ellevated, which helps you build up alcohol tolerance, but lso diminishes your bodys ability to metabolize other things.  It really underscores the importance of everything in moderation.  It also is the reason some drugs are contraindicated because one drug can make another drug potentially more toxic due to the fluctuation in liver enzymes.  At least thats the way i remeber it from college 20 years ago.

Wow that's good science! Thanks for the lesson. I guess that makes sense though. I need to drink less alcohol.

I used to love using Roundup to kill all our onary weeds. Gave it up about 8 years ago after hearing all the evils from our local gardening radio show. Another fine chemical introduced from the evil empire of Monsanto.

Now I use a strong vinegar 10 -20% gallon with a spray tank. Sometimes it takes a couple of applications. Best if done during a blistering hot day.

Just add a little honey mustard and you've got a nice salad, eh?

No, nice tip! I'm definitely gonna try that and soon.

Well, I'm a city boy, but even 32-40 days could affect crops I would think?

I was joking,  I thought the comment about the half life being up to 130 days kind of ridiculous.

"Yeah, all the scholars are off by a factor of 4 in case you guys were wondering.  That's why we published this report, because we know you all will believe us and not them."
