Title: LDN (Naltrexone) Boosted My Testosterone!
Post by: instantk on December 01, 2013, 04:35:04 pm
I have had hashimotos with my antibodies being around 2500... just after a few months of using LDN my antibodies were 500 and my testosterone went from 400 to 1000.....

I did read small amount of other users saying how LDN boosts the pituitary LH similiar to HCG ... but theres only a small amount of research out there on it for testosterone

Get out of town!

So you're talking about low dose naltrexone?

http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/ldn/

C'mon share a little.  This is new to me.  Tell me how it works and tell the guys more about it.

Is this the only change you've made to boost your testosterone?  Have other users reported similar gains?

I find this very interesting btw that a combination of improving inflammation and thyroid function could boost T so significantly (at least in some men)...

More verification that "Inflammation is the Root of All Evil", eh?

I don't know but besides a reduction in antibodies and increase in T I haven't seen in increase in any other hormone such as free t3 / t4

This is one fascinating medication.  It just goes to show how powerful the brain can be with regards to hormones.

So what dose are you taking and how often?  Also, any side effects?

Very interesting. Naltrexone is primarily used to treat opioid dependence?   I first noticed my libido drop after several months of daily marijuana use.  I know marijuana isn't an opiate so maybe this is just a coincidence but I wonder if there's a connection since it's psychoactive.

So you have to get a prescription to get it legally in the US?  Do you live in the US?

Marijuana is really a different animal, but there are a LOT of reasons it can hammer libido:

Yes, luckily I only did it for about a year (between age 30-31) and haven't had it since.  I can't say for sure that marijuana lowered my libido, only that I consciously recognized it around the same time.  Regular stoners should beware though.  I too experienced increased libido while under the influence (high), but when sober there was a noticeable drop.  In other words, don't think that just b/c you're hornier when high that marijuana isn't doing damage to your libido.

There are widespread reports of increased energy and improved quality of sleep (with more vivid dreams) from people on the internet who have reported their experiences using LDN to treat various diseases. Another interesting phenomenon reported by men is an increase in morning erections, and although the cause of this is not exactly known it may have something to do with an increase in testosterone levels.

I am not sure if there is a substantial connection between LDN therapy and testosterone, but naltrexone definitely has the potential to influence the hypothalamic pituitary testicular axis (HPTA). Many studies have shown increases in testosterone levels in animals (including humans), as well as increases in sexual activity and libido with administration of naltrexone. Naltrexone increases the release of GnRH from the hypothalamus, and GnRH is the signal that causes the pituitary to release LH and FSH, which of course then increases testosterone and sperm production in the testes. Opiate receptors have an important regulatory role in GnRH production, and apparently receptor blockade results in increased output of GnRH. Of course LDN therapy only results in temporary opiate receptor blockade, so any up-regulation of the HPTA is probably also transient. Whether this nighttime spike in HPTA activity is enough to cause an increase in morning “wood” is debatable, and its possible that some other neuroendocrinological phenomenon is at play.

Thanks.  So for those with pituitary or testes issues, this may not work.

I’ve tracked down two studies, both of which trialled men with no obvious somatic cause for their dysfunction.  The studies reported significant increase in npt for the men taking naltrexone (but not the placebo).

The first (University of Rome) trial reported that 11 of 15 patients improved their sexual performance too, and that two months later, five were still improved.   The second (University of Bonn) trial again reported much increased npt, but implied little or no improvement in sexual function.

No increase in LH or testosterone was found in either trial, suggesting that the positive effect of the drug on sexual behaviour was exerted at a central level.   There were no significant side effects.

The Bonn trial reflects my general experiences with my own ‘experiments’: increases in npt are easy, but translating that to better sexual function is not.

The Rome trial was a little vague about the extent of improvements in erectile function

But naltrexone is reasonably cheap (about £10 a week) and I might give it a try.

Sorry to bring this thread back. Not sure if that's some kind of no-no around here, but I'm really curious. Instantk, where did you get your LDN if you don't mind me asking?

Well, the only no no is if it was from a non-prescription source.  Then you have to PM and discuss privately:  can't have it on the boards proper.

Not necessarily in older guys.  Or at least trib tends not to bevas effective as you age.

Hi,
I know this is an older post, but I am actually considering the use of LDN not for testostrone but as part of a protocol for healing SIBO(Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth)
So 2 questions I have for those who have tried LDN:
1. Did you measure your Prolactin to see if it became elevated?
2. Did you notice better bowel function with it's use?

Thanks

LDN did not effect bowels or prolactin

LDN did not effect bowels or prolactin

sounds promising,
are you still using it?
did you notice any side effects?
how about any other benefits(besides increase in testostrone).. I am also in contact with another member in a different forum who says she is been on it for 6 months and feels more energy. So I am curious if it had any other effects for you,
Thanks so much.

I just wanted to report back... I have been on LDN for 3 weeks now and if anything it has reduced my sex drive!
I believe the reason is , it has reduced the length and depth of my sleep.... I use to sleep a good 6-7 hours a night and wake up with morning wood.. now I sleep about 4 hours a night and my sleep feels light(I wake up easy) no morning wood... I have also checked with another person who is using LDN for about 6 months and she has also confirmed that she has become a light sleeper... We all know how much REM sleep helps production of testosterone, so I just wanted to caution everyone....

However, it is working for my intended use. I am using LDN as a part of a protocol to heal my SIBO(Small intestine bacteria overgrowth).. and it does help the digestion track to do what I need it to do while I am getting the healing... So unless if I find a natural replacement for it, I am gonna use it at least for 3-6 months(hopefully until my gut heals)

Btw, I am only using 2.5mg which is the lowest dose..

Sure, although I think they're pretty low as is.  What's the lowest dosage you've heard of someone taking with LDN?

My doctor just prescribed, for my chronic pain.  I am not counting on it, but it would certainly be nice to see a bump in testosterone as well!

InstantK's effects did not last forever by the way.  And, of course, it's tough to know why.

Ok thanks, I missed that.  I've read that the endorphin-boosting effects of LDN don't always last either, and so some people rotate it with other medications.
