Title: Fruitarian
Post by: Cronos on June 06, 2012, 01:11:53 am
I've been reading and listening to a lot of information about raw food and more specifically the idea of fruitarianism. 80/10/10 diet. This idea That we are designed to eat primarily fruit some veggies and nothing else. Anybody ever tried this diet? It makes a lot of since that the diet we are designed for is primarily fruit. But I know that evidently fructose is extremely bad for us. Been thinking about trying this diet but don't want to tear up my system either... So could it be that the fructose in fruit is somehow not damaging to us compared to high fructose corn syrup. Most of these people look and seem extremely healthy with no problems. Sorry this post isn't as detailed as I would like but it's late at night and I'm just trying to get it up before I forget. :)

Cronos:

I'm not sure I buy into the whole idea that we were made to eat fruit.  I think there has been a lot of change since that time, so I just don't see that.  Of course, I completely buy into the idea that are diets were for the great majority of our development plant-based and low fat, but I'm not sure one can say the same thing about fruit.

Admittedly, there are some interesting counterarguments and anthropological evidence that we were more fruitarian that we might believe though:

So are you saying that you know someone who was fruitarian or just read about them?

One famous fruitarian was a guy named Johnny Lovewisdom, who was quite the character.  His health went down the toilet and many blame his fruitarian diet, but Johnny Lovewisdom blamed pesticides, etc.:

Plus, I can't imagine being able to afford organic fruit all day every day...

Yeah I agree. Don't see how anyone can really afford to eat like that.

But no i don't know of anyone personally that eats like that... I had just stumbled onto it about a year ago and it just seems to make alot of since. Most of the people that advocate it seem to be really healthy. Some fruitarians also claim that just by switching to that diet you can heal all diseases.  :o Now that seems crazy.

I think it seems like a good argument that if most of our genetic code is similar to primates shouldn't we eat like them as well? I understand changes in diet based on environment, climate changes ect. but surely that wouldn't change our base diet all that much would it if we started out with our diet mainly say fruits and veggies with an emphasis on fruit.

Well, yes, but they eat a variety of foods including non-fruit vegetables, insects, tree nuts and so on.  I haven't been able to find %s yet though:

Looks like some athletes have been fruitarians along with a few celebs as well:
