Need some advise on acne
« on: February 27, 2013, 07:26:20 pm »
Just got back from seeing a dermatologist.
He tells me "my acne is caused by testosterone, and there is nothing that
Can be done to get rid of it.  Every guy on T has the same problem"

I need some help on how to get rid of this!
If there is a way I'm certain someone here has the answer!

It mainly located on my chest stomach and back.

It sprung up nearly over night just 2 days after being diagnosed with
Thrush.  I'm leaning towards this fungal infection possibly being the problem?

There must be something to help??

Whoa!  Every guy on HRT has acne?!?  That's just silly, especially for the middle-aged and beyond crowd, which if I remember right, you are in.  I have had very few complaints of acne on this board for example.

As far as the thrush, I'm not sure but sounds reasonable.  If it is acne, they just came up with a study that showed that dairy products and high glycemic diets are big culprits after all:

I've got a link with some other ideas here as well:

You know, I'm so sick of Dr's I could just scream!

To top it all off he was a dermatologist! Which could mean men on trt
Are specifically seeing him for acne problems!
(If you didnt have acne, you wouldn't need a dermatologist!)
And said there was nothing I could do, it will be a constant battle....

Peak you seem to have a link for everything!

Do you know anything about testosterone to DHT conversion
Possibly causing acne?  Ive read that a few other places.

Yes, TRT can lead to acne as you mentioned.  It's just that it's not that common.  My guess is that it is not really a cause but rather exacerbates the underlying problem.

From what I've heard, the DHT just increases the oil secretions so you have to be that much more diligent about keeping those areas clean and dry. That means changing your shirts more often, maybe always wearing a clean, white cotton undershirt. You could even try some of those anti-bacterial type of shirts which include silver threads etc. I used to get acne on my thighs and what helped me is exfoliating the skin, not with just a loofa, but getting an exfoliating scrub that you rub on. You can feel the difference because your skin will be squeaky smooth like rubber after you finish. I also switched to using a body wash that doesn't have any harmful chemicals in it which can irritate the skin. I mean it's impossible to get rid of them all, but I got as close as reasonably possible. My new bodywash also contains tea tree oil which is a natural disinfectant. To finish it off, I use a lotion to moisturize. When your skin is dry, it secretes more oil. If you keep your skin moisturized with a lotion, it won't make as much oil.

I've always thought it was likely strongly related to diet.  I guess that part of it is that I still remember a guy in college with horrible, scarring acne.  He went on a raw foods-ish diet based on his description and it completely cleared up his acne.  But he couldn't take eating that way and the acne came right back...

Well most of my info comes from bodybuilding boards.
It does seem to be fairly common with them!
So it either testosterone or one of the other chemicals
They Injest causing it.  (I'm betting its the T). It seems
Some of the guys with bad cases take accutane?
(Which must be hard on the body as ALOT of guys are afraid of it)
But it appears to really help them..

I've started using a benziol peroxide wash,  and my GD gave me some
Doxycycline which will hopefully help.

This type of acne is horrible!  I must be able to stop this somehow.

Yep, all standard stuff and standard approaches.

I've heard of clindamycin - NASTY stuff by the way - in Retin-A.  But I don't know about doxycycline.  Is it a topical?

Not topical, it's an oral antibiotic I believe.

Okay.  Well, then watch your intestinal flora.  Almost all of them affect gut flora.  This should be a short term treatment and you should take probiotics in my opinion.  I cannot empahsize enough how important your gut bacteria are:  they affect many counterintuitive things from immunity to blood glucose/insulin regulation.  And on top of that, there is a lot of evidence that hammering your intestines with antibiotics can leave you vulnerable to C. Diff and corresponding colitis, which is just nasty and a life-changing experience.

Or just wash your skin better. This isn't rocket science.

Peak, were on the same page! Started probiotics a few days ago!
My thrush is likely caused by previous antibiotic treatment.

And thanks to the poster telling me to wash more....
He's obviously clueless about this type of acne..
(There is no amount of washing to take care if this!)

Well, washing does help a little of course.  Makes sense about the thrush.  And, yes, we all owe our lives to anitbiotics, but they are much harder on the body than most people realize.
