Does chewing tobacco have same negative effects as smoking?
« on: March 21, 2013, 04:37:22 pm »
Lee - first, thanks for this site and forum.  It's a God-send.  Bought your book, "Peak Erectile Strength Diet" - excellent!

You mention smoking is hard on the endothelium.  Is it nicotine?  I.E., does chewing tobacco or nicorette gum have the same effect?

Thx for the kind words - glad something helped.

Nicotine is a vasoconstrictor.  This means that it narrows the arteries and leads to less blood flow.  You could call it anti-Viagra.

Nicotine also may hammer your immunity per a number of studies:

http://europepmc.org/abstract/MED/9666281
"Nicotine-induced modulation of T Cell function. Implications for inflammation and infection."

The gross endothelial damage that comes from cigarette smoking is mostly from the smoke though:

http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1046/j.1365-2613.2000.00162.x/abstract;jsessionid=8B0465F27E21296AA90DAFD67E59C477.d02t01?deniedAccessCustomisedMessage=&userIsAuthenticated=false
"Cigarette smoking, endothelial injury and cardiovascular disease"

"Nicotine and carbon monoxide are much less damaging than is whole smoke. However the free radical components of cigarette smoke have been shown to cause damage in model systems. Further work will be necessary to consolidate the evidence base but the data reported in this review suggest that the free radical components of cigarette smoke may be responsible for the morphological and functional damage to endothelium that has been observed in model systems."

I chewed in college.  It's good stuff for a fidgety high-strung guy like myself.  But stay away from it.  Just look at some photos of oral cancer and you won't touch the stuff...

I quit smoking in January 2012 with an electronic cigarette.  Some of the health benefits were almost immediate.  I'm still using the electronic cigarette but I've been gradually reducing my nicotine intake, and the goal is to be completely done with it this year.

An electronic cigarette doesn't actually produce smoke it makes a water soluble vapor produced from propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, flavorings, and nicotine.

I think over the past year I've spent less than $800 on supplies ( I make my own fluid) if I were still smoking I would have spent over $4,000 in the same time period (cigarettes are expensive here).

Well, it's a step in the right direction, so congrats.  I've seen the struggles of friends and family in quitting.

But how about drinking some black coffee, black tea, hibiscus tea, beet root juice, raw cocoa tea or some other positive substitute that will either boost your nitric oxide or cap your blood sugar rises?  The latter four will dilate your arteries instead of constricting them and the first may prevent you from getting diabetes or prediabetes.

Sure, you'll have a headache for a few days and shakes for a night, but your penis will thank you.  Do it for the Little Guy - nobody else is watching out for him - you gotta do it, right?  No, seriously, the only way I can get rid of a bad habit is to substitute a good one, so find something that you can put in its place is my suggestion.

There is something called nicotine vein damage. The nicotine itself is harmful. If you took nicotine by itself in something like an e-cigarette, it would be less harmful than chewing tobacco because chewing tobacco has fiberglas in it that erodes your gums and other chemicals too. Either of those are still going to make your veins stickier however and lead to more clots and hardening of your arteries. It'll still kill you and it's no joke for me. I quit because I had a pulmonary embolism at 27 years old! It was hard, but if you can go 2 months, it gets easier.

Thank you all for your input!  I'm chewing nicotine gum right now, and have chewed and smoked off and on for over 30 years.  I would smoke to quit chewing and vice versa.  I too am a fidgety, high strung type so quitting is pretty hard.  I quit chewing last year and found a piece of nic gum in my cupboard.  I did the dumb thing - popped it in my mouth.  I'll chew up what I have left and quit, and report back to y'all when I do.  Thanks again.  :)

You have to find some other way to pacify the mind and get those mini-boosts.  I have my own tricks, but everyone is different...

For me it was drinking tons of green tea and exercise. You don't want to smoke when you're already out of breathe.

For me it's exercise and black tea with a little coffee.
