Maca
« on: April 09, 2013, 10:27:12 pm »
Hi guys,

I got some Organic Maca powder today and was wondering how people are using it.  The directions say 1 tsp mixed in water, juice or shake, once per day.

Appreciate the input.

This was one guys way of covering up the taste:

I just manned up and stirred it in my oatmeal with a little honey.

Btw, remember that it is possible to have trouble digesting the powder.  If you do, get the gelatinized form.  (I'm assuming the gelantin does not have excitotoxins in it.)

I mixed it with oatmeal and cinnamon this morning.  Not bad,  but I am only using a tsp right now as I get use to it.

I put it in my protien shake. It's the worst smelling/tasting of all the stuff I'm taking right now. I am seriously wondering if it's worth it...

I have written about this many times, but I agree with you.  I've never really been able to hide it.  It is powerful stuff, though - at least for me.  But I haven't taken it awhile just cuzz of the taste.

And, by the way, I will eat almost any food - very non-picky eater.  Well, a more accurate way to put it is that the only thing that stop me from eating foods is health considerations, not taste...

Sanjay Gupta was on Dr. Oz the other day and talked about a Turmeric tea he drinks daily.

Ingredients
1 cup almond milk
1/2 tsp turmeric
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp honey
1/4 tsp ginger

Directions: Heat the almond milk in a microwave, stir in the spices and drizzle the honey on top. Enjoy!

I tried this with 1 tbsp. of Maca and it wasn't bad.  The trick is getting all of the Maca to dissolve.

Found this interesting comment concerning Maca and thyroid disorders

"Maca provides these benefits without the side effects associated with many medications and even with other herbal remedies, according to Drugs.com. Individuals with thyroid conditions should not take this supplement because of the glucosinolate content, which can cause a goiter if consumed in large amounts when eating a low-iodine diet. "The Physicians' Desktop Reference" notes that maca might cause an allergic reaction in some people, with symptoms of breathing problems, tightness in the throat or chest, chest pain, hives, a rash, itchy skin or swelling."

If you guys search for Maca recipes you can contribute your ideas there. The best one I have found so far is with eggs.
