Magnesium and Testosterone
« on: April 19, 2013, 05:47:28 am »
I came across a second study that showed that magnesium can increase testosterone.  But this study was particularly interesting because only those who exercised got the big benefits.

I wouldn't go crazy with this as one study shows it also increase IGF-1, which some link to cancer.

If you are on medications or have a medical condition, always check with your doctor first before making any lifestyle changes or taking new supplements.  And low testosterone is a medical condition.

Interesting. So what do you think is the optimal time to take magnesium - if one wants to increase testosterone? Before workout?

Good question.  I don't have the actual study but here is the abstract:

Magnesium before bed helps many guys sleep better, but that is probably not the optimal time to achieve the above effect.

That's not weird - that's common.

Magnesium is actually a precursor to seratonin I believe - yes, another example of magnesium's metabolic superpowers - and thus can help with achieving a relaxed state.

This is why I don't take too much magnesium - maybe 30% of my RDA.  I do that just because of soil depletion as a kind of insurance policy.

But too much magnesium - and this is rather extreme - can lead to Seratonin Syndrome:

Don't worry about that - I'm just passing along information - but remember that if you boost seratonin too much, it will likely negatively impact erections.

So a good, whole foods diet with ample magnesium and a little supplementation for insurance is what I think is prudent.
