Exercise Improves Gut Flora Independent of Diet
« on: December 09, 2017, 06:27:52 am »
This is interesting.  We think of primarily diet and certain medications, i.e. things we ingest, as changing gut flora.  However, it looks like exercise can do this all by itself:

https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/12/171204144757.htm

"Recipients of the exercised mouse microbiota also had a higher proportion of microbes that produce butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid that promotes healthy intestinal cells, reduces inflammation and generates energy for the host. They also appeared to be more resistant to experimental ulcerative colitis, an inflammatory bowel disease.

"We found that the animals that received the exercised microbiota had an attenuated response to a colitis-inducing chemical," Allen said. "There was a reduction in inflammation and an increase in the regenerative molecules that promote a faster recovery.""

Really interesting. I was hoping they'd at least speculate on how this works, but one of the authors simply said "We have more work to do to determine why that is."

Yep.  I had the same question.  I know that exercise is incredibly gut for the gut, or at least there is a school of thought out there that it helps initiate movement therein.

It should be pointed out though that overtraining leads to gut issues quite frequently per several studies:
