Pea Protein and Blood Pressure
« on: January 06, 2014, 12:57:42 am »
I would nominate Pea Protein to this list ( I use the NOW brand). There was a study reported in science news many years ago that an extract of Yellow peas lowered blood pressure. Mine had started to creep up so I gave the protein a try, and it dropped back down and stayed down...Not a statistically valid study, but I just googled the topic again and there seem to be a lot of more recent studies that say the same thing.

Nice tip Festus.  Are you talking about the pea protein powder that vegetarian/vegans bodybuilders use?  Or is this like a capsule thing or something?  If it's the protein, how many scoops you taking?

I  use the vegan powder. I use about a scoop per day although at one time I used about a scoop and a half. I can't image capsules containing enough or being cost effective, but maybe someone has developed an extract. I add Leucine also to raise the protein quality and also alternate it with whey and rice protein, as well as food sources to maintain variety so I don't develop and allergy to any one protein. Some people I have recommended it to found the taste to be horrible so for people in that camp, you might try mixing it with sour cream or yogurt, which seem to mask the taste pretty well. It seemed to drop my systolic by about 7-10 points.
