I'm not sure I buy into the whole idea that we were made to eat fruit. I think there has been a lot of change since that time, so I just don't see that. Of course, I completely buy into the idea that are diets were for the great majority of our development plant-based and low fat, but I'm not sure one can say the same thing about fruit.
Admittedly, there are some interesting counterarguments and anthropological evidence that we were more fruitarian that we might believe though:

One famous fruitarian was a guy named Johnny Lovewisdom, who was quite the character. His health went down the toilet and many blame his fruitarian diet, but Johnny Lovewisdom blamed pesticides, etc.:
