Pregnenolone
« on: August 08, 2012, 03:54:45 pm »
I did a search on this word, and didn't see one word on this hormone...Any thoughts on it?

Does anyone try to supplement with it?

"Much like DHEA, pregnenolone is a completely natural hormone manufactured in the body from cholesterol.  Indeed, pregnenolone is the grand precursor from which almost all of the other steroid hormones are made, including DHEA, progesterone, testosterone, the estrogens, and cortisol.  This is why it is frequently referred to as the “mother hormone.” "

My new pharmacist said a trainer friend of his was complaining about low T. He asked if he was using any supplements. And he was using something along those lines. I didn't catch all the things he was talking about but i did hear something about DHEA and he told him his body was fooling him into thinking he had plenty of T and shut down a lot of his natural production.

Not sure I got the pharmacist's story right, but maybe PeakT has some ideas.

so there seems to be 3 hormones that sort of fit together like this, and i'm trying to figure out which one might be better to supplement with. Of course i will try and see if my uro will test my current levels, so i have a baseline, and know if i even should.

The 3 would be-  pregnenolone, progesterone, and DHEA. Sounds like pregnenolone is a precursor to DHEA (and maybe progesterone is as well? not sure)

seems like if you take pregnenolone, then taking DHEA is not a good idea (redundant, and/or possibly attaining too much DHEA?)

You'll see some alternative docs who believe this is critical.  The problem is that, from what I've seen, there is no set protocol anywhere and not a lot of extensive testing.  So this kind of puts this into the "Black Arts" category as far as I can tell.

Imo this is the equivalent of pushing a small rock off the top of a cliff.  As it rolls down it bumps against other larger rocks that start rolling and those bump against still larger rocks and pretty soon you've got a landslide.  I know that theoretically you are going to the "root source" of the problem, but it's still risky imo because it affects so many hormones with very minimal understanding.

Consider how it can affect DHT and heart arrythmias for example:

If you are on medications or have a medical condition, always check with your doctor first before making any lifestyle changes or taking new supplements.  And low testosterone is a medical condition.
