Best type of exercise for erectile health
« on: July 17, 2012, 08:08:31 pm »
So I'm a fan of body weight exercises.. Thing is I hate cardio.. well I don't hate it, I just kind of suck at it.

Whats the best exercise for erectile health? I'm assuming cardio?

Good brisk walking is the safest form of exercise and the most natural.

If you are new to walking start off easy, but when you are fit, you should walk as if there is a soldier behind you with a bayonet. That's how I make sure I am walking fast enough.

Of course, you should consult your doctor before beginning any new exercise regime.  :)

This is a great and, believe it or not, very involved question.  Both weights and cardio will boost nitric oxide.  Extended cardio (endurance exercise) will tend to lower testosterone whereas weights will tend to raise it a little.  Weights, however, likely does some microdamage to arteries, especially for heavy lifting:

http://www.peaktestosterone.com/Weight_Lifting_Arteries

Now, that said, I love lifting weights - perhaps it's my masochistic side - and I've documented some of the ways it will help in the bedroom here:

http://www.peaktestosterone.com/Weight_Lifting_Sex

Another big thing to keep in mind:  injuries.  One might think that weights would tend to lead to more injuries than running or bike riding.  That's debatable in my mind.  While it's true, almost all middle-aged guys that have weight lifted for years have hurt their shoulders, biceps, elbows, knees and/or backs while lifiting, running injuries are very common as well in those who run more than casually.  I think it's a toss up as to which can more easily take you out of commission.

Now, if you want to read a pro-strength training and anti-endurance training slant, then read Charles Poloquin's articles on the subject.

Now, all of the discussion above ignores what is probably the best exercise for men in the bedroom:  lots of low impact, low intensity exercise.  Seriously, probably the best thing you can do for yourself is a round of golf if you are walking of course.  Stress hormones (if you're a decent golfer) will be lowered; lots of calories will be burned; and, most importantly, no injuries or post-exercise fatigue.

An alternative is just walking.  This kind of exercise is really what our bodies were built for if you will.  How often in our past did we have to toss large logs and move heavy boulders around in order to survive.  And how often did we have to run 10 miles to do the same?  However, in all of our history, walking miles and miles was part of our everyday existence and absolutely necessary for survival and every superculture around the globe has done lots of walking.  You simply can't beat it.

I make a case for it here:

http://www.peaktestosterone.com/Low_Impact_Exercise

Now this subject is huge and every guy has their own slant on it.  Some love biking - watch those bicycle seats! - and some love running and some love weight lifting and some love golf.  I don't think it matters that much as long as you are moving and active and doing something you love.  In fact, that's the great secret:  picking several forms of excercise that you really enjoy and you'll stick with over the years.

I'd love to hear everyone else's two cents of course...

just move... walk (fast), run, bike, lift some weights....keep it varied. i love biking, but if all i did was bike 24/7 i'd be a foam boned, hunched over, possibly limp dicked dude :)

So, i make sure i do more load bearing stuff by trail running 5 miles a couple times a week, in addition to two 10 mile mountain bike sessions a week. In between i lift a little weight.

I've been told my blood pressure is perfect, and the arteries (at least in my penis area), are stellar.

Now if my hormones (T) would only stay "perfect." :)

Actually, I was thinking about it a little more and the best exercise for the bedroom is intercourse itself according to this study:

http://www.peaktestosterone.com/sex_erectile_dysfunction

5 times the difference in erectile dysfunction rates!  It's gonna be hard to beat that, eh?

So I guess your heart rate isn't the only thing you want to get pumping...

That study doesn't convince me.

I think if you asked the guys who do not have regular sex why not, they'd say that it is not so much that they don't want to but they can't as they have ED, whereas the guys who do have regular sex would say they have no ED.

A comparison would be car ownership. You'd find that of all the guys who drive a car regularly, they actually own a car, whereas those guys who drive a car less often do so because they can't afford their own car.

As always PeakT, you give lots of food for thought.
I guess my regimen isn't that bad then.. I do pushups, pullups, squats and dips.. and I jog, ot do some lame cardio for about 15 to 20 mins whenver I can get my lazy butt to do it.

As to that study- I think there may be something to that. I've noticed I always have more problems in the sack when I am not getting any for a while. Where as I can rememeber every relationship I've been in.. once the sex gets going, I rarely have perfrmance issues. Maybe its a psychological component as well? if you are having sex often, you'r more comfortable with yourself during the act?
Interesting

Keep up the good work.

It's undoubtedly somewhat psychological, but it builds testosterone, pelvic muscles, dopamine, etc.  It also helps you sleep better and oxygenates the penis.  It's physical too...

Btw, sexual intercourse really helping you in relationships could also mean you're a tad bit neurotic.  Nothing to be ashamed of in the least.  (I'm not neurotic myself - just a little eccentric.)  Check out this study:

Oh, I am definitely neurotic to some extent. lol. I wish that was a joke, but I know I must be. I have had panic attackes when I was younger, I have a hard hard time relaxing and letting go, etc.
Sucks, but it is what it is. Wish they a supplement for that!

Consider S-PS, Vit C, Meditation - nothing weird here just the physical technique - and PMR.  PMR, by the way, was original designed for neurotics and those with various psych disorders and it has had considerable success and adoption.  I did a page on it:

http://www.peaktestosterone.com/Progressive_Muscle_Relaxation

NOTE:  S-PS is relatively unknown and untested supplement in the long term.  But it can help you diagnose.
