Ideal estradiol and SHBG levels?
« on: August 24, 2012, 01:13:52 pm »
Hi all -

So if these two items have a lot to do with free T (and T overall), what are the ideal levels? i imagine keeping them both below 20?

thanks for any input

Just got a sec:

You do NOT want estradiol going too low.  This article gives you some numbers:

http://www.lef.org/magazine/mag2010/may2010_Why-Estrogen-Balance-is-Critical-to-Aging-Men_01.htm

The best way to think of free testosterone imo is as a % of total testosterone.  Ideally you want it in the 2-2.5% range but some men dip down to about 1.5%.

Here is some info about it:

http://www.peaktestosterone.com/Free_Testosterone_SHBG

You can try to get your free testosterone up.  I haven't seen a lot of studies documenting success/failure of this, but if you are doing a positive lifestyle change and it boosts your free T %, that's likely another plus.

There is actually a debate regarding free versus bioavailable versus total testosterone.  Which is better and more critical?  There are actually good arguments for all three and probably all 3 are important.  That's why ideally imo you want a reasonable total T and a decent free T %.

If you are on medications or have a medical condition, always check with your doctor first before making any lifestyle changes or taking new supplements.  And low testosterone is a medical condition.

thanks...that first link is interesting. Estradiol of 37 or above had highest death rate. I have 37...

However, i don't even know if that's the true number. I learned over on Dr. Chrisler's message boards that you literally cannot get a true estradiol reading at all when on Clomid (or even TRT!)

I got this "the ONLY test for estradiol that men on TRT/clomid should get is the estradiol sensitive (or ultrasensitive for Quest) tests.

It is very specific to order the right test. Otherwise the E2 test is invalid."

It would be really great if my doctor actually mentioned this kind of stuff....unless he doesn't agree. In fact i brought that up, and he just "well that isn't really true."....yet i get the sneaking suspicion he was just saying that.

Peak have you heard this>?

No, that is interesting:  I'll have to find out more.  I do know that hypogonadal men really should get the more sensitive testosterone test:  the older, standard one is not always accurate for them.  Hopefully, most doctors know this...

Try not to look at it like that (in my humble opinion).  The real situation if you ask me is that we are in the infancy of finding out about how the human bod really works.  it's incredibly complex and involved and the discoveries are exciting and flying out of the laboratories around the world.  It is impossible to keep up with.

Enjoy the ride, though.  When I consider how far our knowledge has advanced since even 10-15 years ago, it's mind-boggling.  Many of the q's that I had back then have now been answered by science - it's great!

So right now:  live natural; watch your hormones; start your life over...
